Evolution

2020-2021 Evolution sculpture,  A sphere 80 x 80 cm, representing the hatching of life, from which other life enters the world and floats above us, looking down and observing from a make-believe planet. Anselm Kiefer was instrumental in my process of making. Kiefer in his sculptures uses everyday often worn, trodden on and discarded articles of objects that have played a part in his life, often drawing back to the Nazis era. Twenty Years of Solitude,1993. A sculpture made of piles of pictures, rolled-up canvases, long dried sunflower stems hanging down towards the floor, lead palettes, and books of all sizes. Twenty Years of Solitude, represents a fragment of a glimpse into his life, articulating memory. My sculpture through its broken, jagged and frayed layers captures the physicality and delicacy of my world.

As I reflect on Evolution, memories of my adolescence years, a time when expressing outwardly to people was a  difficult time, how to articulate my feelings and did I really want to express my most inner thoughts and self-doubt, as my deepest thoughts became integral to growing up. Evolution is a place to harbour, walk into close the hatch lockdown shut off, a safe inner world, a sanctuary that I failed to express outwardly. So, this sculpture encapsulates both the shield, that inner layer and the letting go when the sphere is cut open and life is free to venture into a world of mystical make-believe.

Paper Mache sculpture 2020

This project is a series of 192 papier mâché’s made out of bond paper, PVA glue and water. The sculptures are the size of the top of my finger as I used my fingers to create a fragment of my body. The sculptures were moulded wet and dried to pose an ephemeral bandage-like fragile form. Some have small holes at the ends and were died not to emulate blood but to give a hint of human trace. Sensations, fragility and temporality of the body, what it means to be conscious within our bodies and to let go release all thoughts and float into the universe, a place far beyond our own universe, this is my intention for these works.
